Campers looking for a scenic spot between Nakusp and Revelstoke are in for a treat this season, with a new RV park now taking reservations following a five-year and $2-million investment.
Halcyon Heights is about a kilometre north of Halcyon Hot Springs on the east side of Highway 23. Along with 22 RV sites, paved roads and free Wi-Fi, the campground also offers its Lakeview cabin and suite for visitors without a bed to sleep on.
The site – which lies about an hour’s drive from Revelstoke, and 25 minutes from Nakusp – could remain open until as late as the end of October, depending on the weather.
Other amenities at Halcyon Heights include rinse water taps, 20- and 50-amp power hook-ups, washrooms and showers, sanitary dump stations, garbage disposal, and for-purchase items such as drinking water, ice and firewood (subject to any fire ban) available at the camp store.
Bike and e-bike rentals are also added to the mix.
“We’ve been building the campsite for about five years now,” says Dan Wiebe, who owns Halcyon Heights with his wife Sandi.
He estimates they put about $2 million into developing and equipping the facilities. “It’s going to be a really nice little campsite.”
The property used to sport an RV park in past decades, but over time, the roads became too tight for larger vehicles to turn around on, and buildings were added to cater to non-RV visitors, says Wiebe, who hails from Nakusp and has owned the land of the current campground for about 10 years.
Still, “it was pretty much always full,” Wiebe recalls.
Though not an RV user himself, Wiebe imagined one would want a more private site, adding that many RV parks in the region “cram people in like sardines.”
“The nice part about (being on) the hill is everyone gets a gorgeous view,” he adds. “If someone wants to go swimming at the beach, it’s probably not the campsite for them.”
No RV of your own? Halcyon Heights offers one site with its own RV for rent, allowing others to save money while also trying the camper van experience.
“Someone that doesn’t own an RV can go camping, without the cost of towing and owning an RV,” Wiebe explains.
Property manager Jennifer Klassen, who runs the campground and store with her husband, Kelvin, is excited to welcome motorized campers to the area, especially as an RV user herself.
Same-day bookings are allowed, Klassen says, and prospective campers should consult Halcyon Heights’ cancellation policy online.
Site bookings start at $50.
