Whiffin Spit is set to get some artistic upgrades as Sookies descend on its beaches to celebrate Canadian culture.
The Sooke Arts Council is inviting community members down to Whiffin Spit on Sept. 21 to celebrate Canada’s Culture Days by making beach art.
“Participants are encouraged to let their creativity flow by building art installations along the shoreline using natural, beach-found materials,” announced the District of Sooke in a news release.
Culture Days is a pan-Canadian movement to celebrate the arts and culture of Canada. At the end of September, people across the country are invited to participate in free arts and culture events in person and online.
“Beach art has become a local highlight, combining creativity, community, and the stunning natural backdrop of Whiffin Spit,” says event organizer Lynda Slater.
Cash prizes will be awarded and Sooke band Bodeus will provide the soundtrack for the creative process. The Sooke Harbour House will get in on the fun as they open their grounds for the afternoon, offering casual seating and an opportunity for visitors to enjoy the gardens on site. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the bakery window and restaurant.
“Being part of the community and supporting local events is important. It’s about being good neighbours,” says Antoine Gay, Sooke Harbour House front of house manager.
All creations must be made solely from materials already found on the beach while respecting environmentally sensitive areas. The district reminds participants that nothing may be brought home and nothing may be taken from living plants to be used in the beach art.
The event will be hosted by the Sooke Art Council, kicking things off Sunday, Sept. 21 at noon and running until 3 p.m.
