Calgary’s Zoolights shines bigger and brighter this holiday season

One of Calgary’s most anticipated holiday events returns for its 28th season, “bigger, brighter and bolder than ever before” this week.

Illuminating the Calgary Zoo from Nov. 15 to Jan. 5, Zoolights transforms the grounds into a sparkling winter wonderland – a chance to experience the magic of twinkling lights and dazzling displays, plus activities like ice skating and axe throwing, delicious treats, animal facts and more.

Those who make Zoolights a regular tradition will also find lots of new experiences to enjoy.

  • Visit the mischievous elves of “The Festive Forest,” setting up for their big show! – see who you can see and hear as you make your way to Santa’s sleigh for an “Elfie Selfie.”
  • Swing into a Madagascan forest, immersing yourself in the captivating new “Lemur Tales” light display, including art pieces, fun facts and more.
  • Stroll across Discovery Bridge and become mesmerized by a unique light show, with vibrant patterns reflecting into the water below.
  • In Exploration Asia, step into “Savannah Sparkle” and discover the wonders of Africa, with a glowing drum display and soundtrack.
  • Take a whimsical walk through “Aurora Gardens,” where a glowing polar bear awaits, surrounded by the purples, blues and whites of the aurora dancing above.
  • Dance along the “Merry and Bright Tree Trail,” aglow with colourful ground lighting and a choreographed light display set to a holiday soundtrack.

Planning ahead to be in the Calgary area? Purchase your tickets in advance to save. You can even make a day of it by choosing the Sunlight to Zoolights option and spend the afternoon (starting at 1 p.m.) exploring the zoo and visiting your favourite animals, before experiencing the wonder of Zoolights, which runs from 5 to 9 p.m.

Organizers suggest allowing 90 minutes to take in the full Zoolights experience, with the last admission to the park is at 8:30 p.m.

Santa will be stopping by until Dec. 23 – visit him in the Santa Experience, inside the Skoki Classroom.

And for a spin around ice, stop by the free outdoor skating rink at the tent on the Asia Lawn, where you’ll also find free skate rentals available. The last entry to skate is at 8:45 p.m.

Also on the Asia Lawn is axe throwing, allowing guests aged eight and older to take up to three free swings. Find times and details under the frequently asked questions here.

Sensory-sensitive guests can stop by the North Gift Shop for a free sensory bag (first come first served) with supplies to help improve their ZOOLIGHTS experience, including headphones, a fidget spinner and more.
