Canyon Ski Resort adds sky-high Adventure Park to summer thrills

Canyon Ski Resort, outside Red Deer, Alta., has kicked off summer with a new attraction!

Monday marked the launch of the mountain’s new Adventure Park, a 40-foot structure that offers multiple activities.

“There are four different levels on Adventure Park with … a series of challenge courses with games,” says David Martel, Canyon’s general manager. “The first level is a training course. The second level is a beginner course. The next level up is your intermediate course – the games on that one are a little bit trickier. Then the top level is the advanced course.

“It’s designed so you can have a series of progression. If you aren’t comfortable moving up, you can just stay at a certain level.”

Adventure Park also features a rock climbing wall and a free fall descent from the top floor. Martel said he believes the “neatest feature” of Adventure Park is the net park.

“It’s the only net park in Western Canada,” he says.

“It’s geared towards people who maybe aren’t comfortable with heights. There are no harnesses required and it’s offered for a wide age span – three years and up. It’s a series of suspension bridges all fully enclosed in nets so there is no potential for falls.”

The park will also feature a zipline, which is nearly operational.

“The reaction has been really positive so far. It has a definite wow factor when you see it. I like to think it has an ever better wow factor when you’re standing on top looking over the valley because you can see right to the bottom,” Martel says.

Canyon has added several summertime attractions over the past few years, introducing the Canyon Coaster, Alberta’s only alpine coaster, in 2022 and a tube slide last summer. In addition to Adventure Park opening this year, Canyon has also introduced a small Eurobungie dome.

“When our family purchased the hill in 2010, we rebranded from Canyon Ski Area to Canyon Ski Resort because we wanted to offer a four-season product. We’ve always done our weddings and corporate events in the main day lodge, but we really wanted to expand the summertime market,” said Martel.
