Explore Port Alberni – Canada’s Ultimate Fishing Town

Located on the shores of the Alberni Inlet, Port Alberni has long been known for its ideal waterfront location. Named Canada’s Ultimate Fishing Town by the World Fishing Network, Port Alberni is widely recognized as the salmon capital of the world. Whether you want to be on the water or in it, there’s an adventure here for you.

Fishing

A number of local charter companies provide one day trips and multi day excursions on the Alberni Inlet, Barkley Sound, Somass River and Stamp River. Charter options include private fishing lodges and on-board accommodation. Trap, fish and jig with Alberni Charters. Discover a wealth of local fishing knowledge at Slivers Charters. Charter a trip to the pristine Kyuquot Sound through Murphy’s Sport Fishing.

For boat access to the Alberni Inlet, the Clutesi Haven Marina has a four-lane launch ramp, ample parking and fish cleaning stations.

For fishing regulations visit: www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca. The Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery is a successful Coho and Chinook enhancement facility on Vancouver Island. Just a short drive west of Port Alberni, the hatchery is open to the public year round.

The MV Frances Barkley

Climb about the MV Frances Barkley, a 200 passenger and cargo vessel and enjoy a scenic day trip down the Alberni Inlet to Barkley Sound. With trips to Ucluelet in the summer and Bamfield year round Lady Rose Marine Services offers a unique opportunity to enjoy stunning scenery from the water. See the inlet and the surrounding mountains, watch eagles soar and sea lions sunbathe. It’s not unheard of for passengers to see whales and dolphins in the Sound. These popular excursions can fill up fast, so we recommend booking in advance for the busy summer months.

Sproat Lake

Home to the Sproat Lake Regatta, Dragon Boat Racing and the Outriggers Canoe Race, Sproat Lake is a boater’s paradise. Sproat Lake Provincial Park boasts a beautiful waterfront park complete with picnic tables and a sandy beach, this is the perfect place to take a dip, or sit back and enjoy the spectacular view.

If sitting isn’t really your thing, a short hike along the waters’ edge will take you to see the Petroglyphs.

Alberni Inlet

Take advantage of the afternoon winds at China Creek Campground and Marina and try your hand at kiteboarding. Paddleboard rentals are available from Totally Board Surf Shop and access the inlet from Canal Beach. Lady Rose Marine Services also provide transport to the Broken Island Group for experienced kayakers.
