Penticton lot to be transformed into vibrant entertainment hub this summer

An “underutilized” part of Penticton’s Main Street is getting a makeover this summer.

The Downtown Penticton Business Improvement Association is set to launch the Community Pop-Up Project, a series of events that will transform the vacant lot at 598 Main St. into a hub for live music, activities and beverage garden.

“We are thrilled to bring this project to life and infuse more energy into our downtown,” said Brett Turner, executive director of the Downtown BIA, which says it also working with the City of Penticton to make its plan a reality.

The Community Pop-Up Project will be held on four dates this year, starting on June 20:

• Thursday, June 20 — The project’s opening event, organized in partnership with the Peach City Beach Cruise, will feature a mini car show on White Avenue adjacent to the lot, as well as live rock and country music by Okanagan band Room to Dance.

• Thursday, July 11 — A mini night market, in collaboration with local business Ellie Wylde Design Co., comes to the lot with live country music from Kelowna-based artist Shalisa.

• Monday, Aug. 5 — Event organizers will team up with the Penticton Peach Festival to bring rock band Get Chico to the stage.

• Thursday, Sept. 5 — The project works with the Pentastic Hot Jazz Festival to feature live music from Yanti and Co.

A beverage garden and food from Kin and Folk Restaurant will be featured at each of the events.

“These events offer entertainment while also fostering a sense of community and supporting local businesses,” Turner added.

The Downtown Penticton BIA said this week that although the vacant lot is currently underutilized, the new project will give the area a “vibrant” transformation.

Dubbed “Street Beats and Eats,” the community initiative will happen from 5 to 8 p.m. on each of the four dates.

“This exciting new community space is designed for everyone to enjoy throughout the summer,” reads a press release from Downtown Penticton BIA, which will formally announce the project’s launch at an event on June 12.

“Though temporary, it aims to leave a lasting impression on the community.”
