If you’re a bird lover, you’ll love visiting the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary, which is the province of Alberta’s oldest migratory bird sanctuary.

Within Red Deer city limits, this sanctuary is nearly 122 hectares of protected land featuring five kilometres of hiking trails.

The entrance to the sanctuary is at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre, a facility named after a remarkable wildlife writer who was based in Red Deer.

During normal operations, visitors can get tours from one of the centre’s naturalists, or borrow binoculars and snowshoes.

Before travelling, check out the City of Red Deer’s website to find out about current COVID-19 restrictions and the government of Alberta’s website for the same.
