What’s going on around the West Coast? Here’s your inside guide to what’s happening where, and how to join in the fun (Hint: it includes a penguin waddle!)

Dine Out Vancouver returns

The 2023 Dine Out Vancouver Festival returns to the Lower Mainland, inviting diners to sample a wide variety of restaurants, all offering three fixed-price menu ranges: $20 to 34, $35 to$49, or $50 to $65.

Running through Feb. 5, the event is a favourite of the winter season, a great way to explore a new-to-you destination or return to try something new at an old favourite.

Find the complete list of restaurants and their menus at dineoutvancouver.com, where you can also make your reservations.

And, and one of the largest culinary festivals in Canada, this year’s event features the largest number of participating restaurants to date – 370 venues!

Waddle this way!

Winter visitors to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo should be on the lookout for king penguins waddling their way.

During winter, the king penguin colony enjoys a daily enrichment walk out on zoo grounds to keep their brains and bodies healthy and visitors get to experience the fun.

The daily stroll begins at 10:30 a.m. through mid-March, weather permitting.

“This highly anticipated program allows visitors to get an up-close look at the group of king penguins as they explore, exercise and waddle their way through the zoo,” the Zoo notes, adding that “this is a free-choice activity for the penguins and is subject to weather conditions and animal inclination.”

Be on the lookout for the newest member of the group, “Alfred.” According to the Calgary Zoo team, “the young prince is easily identified within the waddle by his ‘cloak’ of thick brown down, which stands out against the black and white ‘tuxedos’ of his loyal entourage.”
