Castor, Alberta, is named after the French term for beaver, so it’s no real surprise that the major recreational facility in the area is named after the iconic Canadian animal.
Called the Beaver Dome, the Castor Arena is the place where minor and recreational hockey teams hit the ice.
“[It] is the hub of our community in the winter months; it is always bustling with after school shinny, basic and power skating sessions, weekly practices, hockey schools and weekend games with packed stands,” the town’s website says.
Hockey truly is Canada’s national sport, with more than 600,000 people being registered as hockey players through various organizations, although in reality there are far more players than that. Alberta, with 65,000 players participating in events sanctioned by Hockey Alberta, has roughly 10 per cent of all the registered hockey athletes in Canada.
