Alberni Valley drag racers have been busy tuning up and getting ready for Thunder in the Valley at the Somass Lands Aug. 9 and 10.
Thunder in the Valley is coming to Port Alberni on the Somass Lands at Tyee Landing Aug. 9 and 10. Festivities kick off Friday, Aug. 8 with a car show by Valley Street Rods at Tyee Landing from 2 to 6 p.m. A burnout contest runs from 7 to 9 p.m.
Racing starts at 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. While access to the pits will be limited due to the configuration at the new site, a viewing area will be set up at Tyee Landing where people can watch the racing on a new, smaller track set up on the industrial site where the Somass Sawmill used to be, event officials said.
Organizers have been busy setting up permanent fencing, with local businesses, organizations and individuals purchasing fence panels to help offset costs of setting up the site.
Admission to the races will be $10 for adults, with children under 12 admitted free. For more information, follow the Alberni Valley Drag Racing Association on Facebook.
