Living history and outdoor adventures await in Stettler (+ great eats and shopping, too!)

It’s hard to know where to start when you’re deciding what to do in Stettler. A small town with a big heart, Stettler will tick all the boxes for everyone in your family, no matter how they like to spend their leisure time!

Located 80km from Red Deer and 97 km north of Drumheller, Stettler is smack dab in the middle of cowboy country, and this unique little big town brings the past to life while offering the latest amenities.

There is something for everyone in Stettler

The outdoors beckons

If you love the outdoors, the Gateway to the Badlands is a great place to be. Here you can step off the beaten path and hike, bike, fish, swim, hunt, boat, see the Northern Lights, camp, horseback ride and more, all summer long.

Wintertime is just as fun!

And outdoor fun isn’t limited to when the weather is warm. Winter brings ice-fishing, downhill and cross-country skiing, tobogganing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling, and the excuse to enjoy a hot drink by the fireside. No matter what you like to do outside, you can do it here.

Living history

Explore the history of the area with some real-life adventure. The Alberta Prairie Railway offers guests a variety of different excursions that feature characters from the past. This old-time engine takes guests on a tour that features live entertainment, including re-enactors staging a train robbery.

Don’t worry: Help is at hand as Gabriel Dumont, Métis buffalo hunter and hero of the Riel Rebellion, is there to save the day! On the way, take in the sights and sounds of turn-of-the-century travel and enjoy a tasty treat two.

Also for the historically minded, or the just plain curious, the Stettler Town and Country Museum is a must-see. It features may turn-of-the-18th-century buildings as well as family histories, newspaper collections, original photos and school registers. This amazing museum is the fifth largest in Alberta and covers ten acres with special annual events for all seasons.

Also a must-see is the P & H Elevator — see history in action at one of the few remaining elevators with important links to Alberta’s pioneer history. While the grain elevator is now a museum, it exemplifies Alberta’s rich agricultural history and traditions. The site occasionally offers threshing demonstrations, horse-drawn harvesting demos. Check with the folks at the P & H Elevator Preservation Society for dates of these and other special events.

Shopper’s paradise

While Stettler is small, its shopping district offers a wealth of services and shops, with boutiques featuring everything from locally made soaps and bath products, to high-fashion clothing and shoes, to hard-to-find kitchen wares. Find out why locals come from miles around to shop till they drop!

Hungry yet?

No matter what delights your tastebuds, you‘ll find it here. Satisfy your sweet tooth and please your eye at Sweet Home, sharing delectable baked treats, or check out the eclectic menu at Otherside for a delicious sit-down meal. From cultural delights to everyone’s favourite, Stettler has a wide variety of restaurants and cafés that fit your schedule and your taste.

If the outdoors, living history, great shopping and great eats isn’t enough, check out the many special events that happen year-round.

Plan your visit at destinationstettler.com

From Red Deer by vehicle: Take 49 St W and 50 St to AB-11E, then follow AB-11 E and AB-12 to AB-56 N in Stettler (56 min).

A beautiful sunset to end a fun-filled day
