Explore Saysutshun: A summer oasis just seven minutes from Nanaimo

Only a 10-minute passenger ferry ride from Nanaimo’s core, Saysutshun (Newcastle Island Provincial Park) offers 22 kilometres of well-tended trails to suit any age and fitness level. The relatively level trails are perfect for running, biking or a gentle stroll through nature, and your four-legged hiking friend is welcome on Saysutshun as long as they’re on a leash.

If this is your first visit to the island, keep in mind that the ferry is passenger-only. It’s a good idea to pre-book your preferred ferry and allow yourself plenty of time to explore. There are many trails to choose from, and each one offers something different. These coastal trails take you past sandy and pebbled beaches that invite you to stop for a refreshing swim.

The Channel Trail passes the old sandstone quarry and leads you to the island’s north end with unparalleled views of Departure Bay. Design your outdoor adventure to include birdwatching, a forest stroll, beachcombing or a meander through all the significant cultural and historical sites on the island.

The Coastal Trail is the most popular walk. This 8 km tour around the island’s perimeter takes about two hours on average – more if you stop to admire the view or read the interpretive signs along the way.
