Only a 10-minute passenger ferry ride from Nanaimo’s core, Saysutshun (Newcastle Island Provincial Park) offers 22 kilometres of well-tended trails to suit any age and fitness level. The relatively level trails are perfect for running, biking or a gentle stroll through nature, and your four-legged hiking friend is welcome on Saysutshun as long as they’re on a leash.

If this is your first visit to the island, keep in mind that the ferry is passenger-only. It’s a good idea to pre-book your preferred ferry and allow yourself plenty of time to explore. There are many trails to choose from, and each one offers something different. These coastal trails take you past sandy and pebbled beaches that invite you to stop for a refreshing swim.

The Channel Trail passes the old sandstone quarry and leads you to the island’s north end with unparalleled views of Departure Bay. Design your outdoor adventure to include birdwatching, a forest stroll, beachcombing or a meander through all the significant cultural and historical sites on the island.

The Coastal Trail is the most popular walk. This 8 km tour around the island’s perimeter takes about two hours on average – more if you stop to admire the view or read the interpretive signs along the way.

Bikeable trails: Many of the trails, including Kanaka Bay, Mallard Lake, and the Shoreline Trail routes, are multi-purpose and can be used for both walking and biking. Get the lay of the land with our downloadable Trail Map.

Go deeper: For an immersive experience, arrange an Interpretive Walking Tour with a Snuneymuxw guide. The tour is approximately 1.5 hours and includes first-hand stories and traditions that have been passed down through generations. Or prepare for your adventure with a virtual journey from home. The On This Spot app blends past and present through captivating photo comparisons and historical insights.

Saysutshun welcomes you with open arms

Whether you’re feasting at the Pavillion by Trollers On Land or paddling your kayak through calm waters, we think you’ll love it here. From the moment you step off the ferry, Saysutshun is a little bit magical. Plan your journey at saysutshun.ca. And don’t forget to pre-book your ferry, so you can spend all your time exploring this local secret off Vancouver Island’s coast.
